His WORK includes fundamental and applied research on crystallization kinetics and properties of glasses and glass-ceramics (GC), including rigorous tests, improvement or development of nucleation and growth models for glasses, effects of liquid phase separation on nucleation, surface crystallization kinetics, overall crystallization, glass stability, glass-forming ability, molecular structure and nucleation mechanism, sintering with simultaneous crystallization, diffusion + relaxation in glasses, mechanical, rheological, thermal and bio properties of glasses and GC. The technological branch of Zanotto´s team includes projects in partnership with 25 companies and consultancy to over 40 companies. He is interested in the development of glasses and GC with improved or new functionalities using Machine Learning approaches. EDZ created the Vitreous Materials Lab in 1977. He has PUBLISHED circa 400 original and review papers, 25 book chapters, 3 books, 5 book prefaces, 27 filled patents, and advised ~95 theses and postdocs. 30 of his ex-students and postdocs became professors or glass researchers. He RANKS 7th in the list of patents granted in Brazil. Regarding crystallization of oxide glasses, he is the most prolific at SCOPUS with the keywords (crystal nucleation glass). First in the AD Index (materias Brazil). Leadership index=93%, H index = 65 (Google), FWCI = 1.4. Listed in the PLOS ranking of 1% most influential researchers worldwide. EDZ has received 58 science AWARDS: e.g., Comenda ONMEI 2018, Grã-Cruz medal 2018, Nanocell Institute 2017, Admiral Álvaro Alberto 2014, Comenda Nacional Ordem Mérito Cientifico (Knight) 2006, TWAS Engineering Award 2010, and various "glass" awards. Vidros: da pedra lascada à inteligência artificial
RESUMO
Vidros naturais, como as obsedianas e fulguritas, “sempre” existiram, mas os vidros sintéticos inorgânicos não metálicos foram descobertos há cerca de 6.000 anos. No século XVII eles viabilizaram o invento do microscópio e do telescópio, que revelaram os universos micro e macro, das estruturas biológicas e minerais até planetas e galáxias. Por isso foram batizados de “olhos de ciência”. Hoje, além das expressivas aplicações domésticas, há inúmeras outras, fascinantes, como fibras ópticas, filtros para UV e IV, corretores de daltonismo, vidros bioativos, vidros à prova de bala e fogo, e vidros para encapsulamento de rejeitos radioativos. Além disso, através da cristalização controlada é possível sintetizar as denominadas vitrocerâmicas (VCs), materiais avançados usados, por exemplo, em cooktops, revestimentos arquitetônicos, espelhos gigantes para telescópios, próteses dentárias e displays de telefones celulares de última geração. Nesta palestra exibiremos o histórico e estatísticas da contribuição brasileira ao conhecimento científico nesse tema, as definições mais atuais de vidros e VCs e suas principais propriedades. Em seguida discutiremos várias aplicações admiráveis desses fantásticos materiais; exemplos relevantes serão ilustrados por vídeos didáticos. Finalmente, discorreremos sobre a aplicação de algoritmos de inteligência artificial para o desenvolvimento de novos vidros com propriedades inusuais, abandonando a era das tentativas e erros. Por tudo isso, pelo conforto proporcionado a nossa vida e sua importância econômica, 2022 foi escolhido pela ONU como o Ano Internacional do Vidro!
